Acclimatise and set out before a single panel goes up

MDF and timber move with the room. We let the panels sit in the actual room for around 48 hours to acclimatise to its humidity, then set out the full design on the wall first, marking stud positions, socket cut-outs, skirting and the level datum line. Measuring twice and committing once is how you avoid a half-panel sliver in the most visible corner.

Build a true, plumb surface on walls that are never flat

Irish walls are rarely dead flat or plumb. Rather than gluing panels to a bow and hoping, we scribe panels to follow uneven walls with a compass, or batten out and pack behind to create a flat, plumb nailing plane. A long spirit level checks every few panels so a tiny lean does not snowball across a long run.

Fix it so it stays fixed, with the right tools

We use a zigzag bead of grab adhesive plus pins driven into studs or battens with a professional DeWalt nail gun, so panels are held mechanically as well as glued and will not drum, lift or pop a nail when the timber moves with the seasons. Cut edges are sanded and sealed so no raw MDF is left exposed to moisture.

Cut around sockets, switches and skirting cleanly

Sockets and switches are measured and cut precisely, with a slight clearance so the faceplate covers the edge and the panel is free to move. We work around or temporarily lift skirting and run panelling dead level off it, so the finish looks built in rather than stuck on.

Prime, fill and caulk for a furniture-grade finish

Bare MDF is thirsty, so we prime it properly before topcoat to stop the surface bubbling and drinking the paint. Nail holes are filled with a non-shrink filler, sanded flush, and every joint and edge gets a continuous bead of flexible paintable caulk smoothed clean, then painted over so it will not yellow or crack as the house breathes.

Fixing panels straight onto an uneven or unprepared wall with adhesive alone

The cost: Panels follow every bump and hollow, gaps open behind them, and within months they drum, lift at the edges or pop their pins, so the fix is to pull it all off and start again, paying twice for one wall

Skipping acclimatisation and leaving cut edges raw, especially near bathrooms or external walls

The cost: MDF swells, joints open and edges blow as they soak up moisture, so the feature wall that looked crisp on day one looks tired and split by the next damp spell

No proper datum line, so the run drifts off level

The cost: A lean of a few millimetres is invisible at one end and glaring at the other, and on a long wall or up a stairs it is the first thing every visitor notices, with no fixing it without redoing the panelling

Rushing the finish: no primer, shrinking filler, no caulk

The cost: The paint bubbles over bare MDF, nail holes telegraph through as dimples, and hairline cracks open along every joint, so it reads as an amateur job no matter how good the paint colour is
