Done Right The First Time

Vetted, insured tradespeople you can trust, so the job lasts and you never pay twice

Electrical jobs are the one area of the home where a shortcut you cannot see becomes a hazard you live with. That is why every handyman electrical job we send out goes to a vetted, insured tradesperson who works to the Irish wiring rules (I.S. 10101) and tests the circuit before they pack up, so your lights, sockets and alarms are safe, certified where required, and done right the first time. No race to the lowest bidder, no loose terminal waiting to flicker or arc behind the rose six months from now.

What a professional gets right

Power proven dead, not just switched off

Before a single terminal is touched the circuit is isolated at the consumer unit and proved dead with a voltage tester at the fitting itself, because a junction box can carry a second live circuit even after the local switch is off. Polarity is confirmed so live, neutral and earth land where they should, and every connection is torqued tight so nothing is left to flicker, overheat or arc.

Fittings matched to the box and the load

Heavy pendants and chandeliers are hung from a box rated to carry the weight, not the flimsy original, so nothing pulls out of the ceiling. Lamp wattage and fitting are kept within the rated load, the correct connector blocks and earth sleeving are used, and a loop-in ceiling rose is wired back exactly as found rather than guessed at.

Bathroom and outdoor lights to the right IP zone

Bathroom fittings are specified to the zone they sit in (IP65 over a shower, at least IP44 within the splash zone) and outdoor fittings are IP65 or better. Cable entries are sealed with the correct gland and a weatherproof back box so the rated protection actually holds, because a wrong gland undoes an IP rating in minutes and lets damp into the terminals.

Sockets, switches and alarms fitted to standard

Sockets and switches are replaced on the matching I.S. 411 / BS 1363 pattern with the conductors dressed neatly into a sound back box, no trapped copper, no over-stripped cores. Smoke and CO alarms are positioned to the regulations, a CO alarm within five metres of every bedroom and in any room with a fuel-burning appliance, and interlinked units are linked and function-tested together.

Extractor fans vented properly to outside

Replacement extractor fans are ducted by the shortest run to a dedicated exterior vent cap, never left to dump into a loft or wall cavity where the moisture breeds mould. The duct is pitched to drain, insulated through cold spaces and pulled tight to kill sag, and a backdraught shutter is fitted so cold air and damp do not track back in.

Where cheaper jobs go wrong

Working a circuit that was only switched off at the wall, not isolated and proved dead at the consumer unit

The cost: A shared junction box can stay live, so the cheap operator gets a shock or shorts the circuit, and you pay for a callout to repair the damage on top of an installation that was never safe to begin with

Hanging a heavy fixture off the original lightweight ceiling box

The cost: The box tears out of the plasterboard and the fitting drops, taking a chunk of ceiling with it, so you pay twice: once to patch and repaint the ceiling, again to refit the light on a box that should have been rated from the start

Fitting a non-rated light in a bathroom or outdoors, or using the wrong cable gland

The cost: Moisture gets into the terminals, the fitting corrodes and trips the RCD, and you are left in the dark within a season, with the replacement plus the electrician to diagnose the tripping landing back on your bill

Venting a new extractor fan into the loft or leaving loose, sagging ducting

The cost: Warm wet air condenses in the roof and you get damp, staining and black mould that costs far more to remediate than the fan ever did, never mind a fan that barely clears the room it was bought to dry out

Our commitment to you

  • Power is isolated and proved dead at the fitting before any work starts, and the circuit is tested for correct polarity and earthing before we hand it back
  • Light, socket and alarm fittings are installed to the Irish wiring rules (I.S. 10101) by a vetted, insured tradesperson, with certification provided where the work requires it
  • Bathroom and outdoor fittings are matched to the correct IP zone and sealed so the rated protection genuinely holds
  • Extractor fans are vented to outside through proper ducting, never into a loft or cavity, with a backdraught shutter fitted
  • It is done right the first time, so you are not paying a second tradesperson to undo a cheap job, and the work is left tidy and tested

Electrical work is no place to gamble on the lowest bid. Choose HandymanService.ie and a vetted, insured, experienced tradesperson does the job to standard, tests it, and leaves it safe, so the only thing you have to think about afterwards is switching it on.
